America's Largest Fishing Social Network - Community and Forum

It's been awhile since I've been on getreeled, mostly becuase of hunting, ice fishnig, and other hobbies, but the community was always been helpful, and friendly. So heres my story...
I've always dreamed of filling the 75gal (75x25or30) fish tank that was just sitting in the basement with a big old bass or some bluegills, but now its filled with little angel fish, silver dollars, rainbow shark, and etc. Anyways my grandmother is planning on getting a larger tank for her "fishys" and I'll be getting that 75 gal tank when she does, but I have a problem... Are game fish such as a largemouth bass even aloud as a aquarium pet? I've seen videos on youtube, people showing off their bass pets, and I've tryed countless times just trying to find out if its legal in my area or not. I've checked pet stores, I've checked the NY:DEC website; and couldn't find anything, I've searched google, and pretty much everything I could, but still couldn't find a liable source. So here I am now asking "you" not if I can have 1 as a pet, but were can I look, were can I find out if it's legal in my area? Were can I purchase them? Can I catch 1 and keep it as a pet aslong as I don't release it back and into a different body of water?

I live in Wisconsin and it's illegal. You are going to have to check with your county's DNR game warden to see what the law is in your area :)

What Emilee said!

If you want to give me the state you live in, I can take a look. After researching laws around the country for other pet limitations, I've gotten pretty good at finding the appropriate info. Its usually going to be listed with the state fish and game, natural resources, or similar agency. Generally speaking, if the fish is native to your state, it will likely be illegal.

-Leo,

Chances are where you live, it is "illegl", but if you don't do irresponsible things like you were saying, you can probably get away with it. A friend's daughters brought home some pumpkinseeds and put them in with their 75 gal tank of goldfish. Beautiful little fish, and they thrived.

Another friend had a 15 gal tank full of balck-nosed dace. Being schooling, minnow-type fish, they make for a lively aquarium. You can stock the tank on the heavy side, but don't go overboard wih it.

Another route is to see what hatcheries are in the area. You may be able to get a couple trout from a small place. I work at an international aquaculture company myself, and places like that probably won't be of much help. I've never brought any salmon home to my aquariums though; I've never had the interest to do it. They can stay where they are lol.

I hope I was of help. As the saying goes, nothing's illegal until you get caught.

Al.
