April - Roosevelt Lake, Arizona
Been here twice over the last 3 weeks with the hopes of getting into some good Crappie fishing. The Crappie had other ideas and have seemingly had a case of lock-jaw lately. I guess that is what I get for going on April Fools day. So what to do? Slay the Bass.
The first weekend in April my brother and good friend fished the Salt River end of the lake and were able to land quite a few nice bass over the 3 days we were there. Even though the wind was not wanting to cooperate we were able to use it to our advantage in most cases and overcome. In the mornings before the wind picked up we were able to catch some on Zaras and Torpedos. Whith the majority of fish coming off of shallow running cranks.
Last weekend I took my wife and sister. Since the temperature had warmed up over the previous week I was sure we were going to be in the Crappie only to end up with similar results. This trip we were fishing on the Tonto end of the lake where the water warms quicker and had spotty reports of success with crappies. We tried all the tricks and could only catch bass on our crappie gear. We were only there for one day and part of the next so we decided that we would head in to setup camp just to get to the launch to see there was a tourney going on and it was nearing weigh-in. So we tried a spot closer to the launch that I knew was pretty good while the traffic thinned. We got in there and not long after were on a good run of samllies.
only 2 crappies total in these 5 days of fishing but plenty of bass and memories!...
