It's been a while

It's been a while since I wrote a blog here. The past few weeks had been a mixed bag of work, fishing and the mother of all nosebleeds as my wife calls it that ended in me having an operation in my nose. I lost quite a bid of blood, over 2/3 to be exact, and I am still feeling the aftermath of it today.

I have to take it easy for a few weeks and spend that time fishing with my wife on one of the many great fishing lakes near our home. It's July and that means hunting season is only two month aw… Continue

Beautiful Day

Had a great day today. Beautiful weather warm and sunny. The perfect day to take the boat on the lake and do some fishing. Didn’t catch anything though. Came home put the BBQ on and made some of my famous beef ribs, then the wife and I sat together on the porch with a good whisky and watched the sun go down. Sheer magic.

Canada lost one of its greatest anglers and conservationists

With sadness I report today the passing of Frank (Len) Rich, one of Canada’s most active outdoor enthusiasts and conservationist. Unfortunately, I was not able to get to know Len all that well before he passed away. Just before I joined the Outdoor Writers of Canada (OWC) we exchanged a few emails and a couple of phone calls and it had been his enthusiasm about everything to do with fishing, the outdoors and writing, plus his tireless commitment to recruiting new outdoor writers that made me joi… Continue

Discovered a new fishing lake

My wife and I spent a fantastic long weekend in eastern British Columbia. We had two reasons to go there and combine pleasure with work. My wife, a professional photographer, needed pictures of whitetail deer and I needed to scout for an upcoming turkey hunt.

We stayed overnight in Osoyoos and as some of the avid bass anglers might know Osoyoos Lake is one of the few places in BC that holds a fair population of trophy largemouth bass. I scouted the lake a bit and found a few promising locations… Continue

Spring trout season has started

© By Othmar Vohringer

It looks like spring in the Nicola Valley has finally arrived. The last few days the almost balmy weather made short work of the ice on the lakes, with exception of a few lakes at higher elevations the ice is all gone. If the warm weather keeps up these higher up lakes too will soon be ice free.

Fishermen, including me, have been waiting for what seems like a very to long time. With the spring arriving and the ice off the lakes it is time to dig out the fishing tackle box… Continue

It is so hot (95F) here during the day that I have to go out early or risk to be roasted alive in the boat. It's also the time when the fish are most active and as a bonus most other fishers are still in bed. This afternoon I just put new line, Max…

Yes it had been a great day and today I will be at the trap shooting range for most of the day improving my shotgunning skills and mentoring new shooters. I am very active in local community to recruit more hunters and anglers, sometimes I feel that it becomes too much, but it gives me great pleasure.
