Fish are up but the big groups haven't shown up yet as expected

On Sunday the bite was on for big fish. We didn't catch the numbers but I think we had around 10 fish that went over 4 lbs and the biggest was around 6lbs. All fish were caught on a jig anywhere form 2 to 12 feet of water. As the water keeps clearing up that deeper jig bite will do nothing but get better. Yesterday the bite was tough. Everyone that I talked with had a tough day. Even though it was tough I could have had around 19 to 20 lbs for my best 5. I felt bad but my clients wanted me to… Continue

Fishing With S & H Green Stamps

One of the original rewards programs was founded by a Thomas Sperry and Shelly Hutchinson way back in 1896.  Merchants would buy the stamps and reward their customers with S & H Green Stamps in an amount depending on how much in products or services one bought.  Folks would save those stamps by licking and pasting them in books while perusing the catalog and waiting for the day they had accumulated enough books…

Diamond Jigging for Stripers and Blues

Has anyone run into the following problem when diamond jigging for stripers and blues?  Basically I hook the bluedog or striper, but then, because the jig is so heavy, the hook oftentimes comes out of the fish's mouth.  I think it's because it sinks and just comes out of the mouth.  Anyone know how to remedy this?

Stripers and Blues

Has anyone heard anything about the location of the stripers and blues?  I'm figuring only 2 more months until they'll be up in New England.  In the meantime I'm blogging about fishing both here, and on my website.  Check it out:  www.jasonchertoff.com

Thanks

This report is for the last week or so. Starting with last weekend the fishing was really tough with the water dropping out the way it did. I believe the fish were still there it just had them really spooky with the water falling as fast as it did. We had a lot of short strikes and a lot of fish robbing pincher's from our jig trailers. The fish we caught wanted a really slow presentation and almost no movement to the baits. We caught fish on jigs, traps and small crankbaits in 8 foot or less of… Continue

Are pellets dangerous to carp?

Pellets are banned! Don’t use pellets in the winter! Pellets kill carp!

Pellets seal the water’s surface and deprive the lake of oxygen!

Mmm, where do I go from here?

All four statements in the above can be classed as true. The biggest problem we have is the word “pellet“. It is so vague that the mere word has created a problem on so many waters.…

6 types of PVA essential for carp fishing

PVA and other water soluble products which either melt, separate or shrink in the water are incredibly useful products for many carp anglers. Most would be totally lost without several different forms in their tackle bags. From PVA bags, mesh stocking tubes, string, tape and foam nuggets… all are fantastic carp catching aids when used correctly. It would be nice to…

Cold water carping - 9 things you need from a boilie

1. Easily digested – the quicker it’s digested the sooner the carp need to eat again.

2. Low flavour level (that will surprise some!) – if I am presenting baits where I know the carp to be then I don’t need high flavour content.  I have watched fish move from an area away from heavily flavoured baits when they don’t want to feed.  They will tolerate low level flavoured baits being in the swim though and eat them when ready.

3. Soluble ingredients – to assist…

Effective carp rigs - the Ice Rig

The glacon carp rig

I continually assess my fishing methods with a view to improving them wherever possible and I’ve come up with a twist to my glaçons or ice rigs (see Vaux BLOG Winter Carp Fishing – The Ice Rig dated 8th February 2010) as my earlier method was slightly inconvenient, owing to the fact that a hook length is frozen into the glaçon every time one is made – lots…
