Hey everybody, spring is in full bloom and the bass are spawning! Early to Mid April fishing was fantastic for me down here in Southern Illinois. We stuck many big fish during the pre-spawn which offered lots of excitement and good times before the big momma's went to their bedding areas. Spinnerbaits showed strong during the pre-spawn with most of our fish coming off double willow 3/8 oz. spinners with golden shad skirts and trailers. This past week I got out to the farm pond we have been… Continue

I've been looking all over the place for these things. Iv'e checked bass pro, dicks, sports authority, smaller bait shops, wal-mart, kmart, and even online. I'm not talking about skirted jigs but just the bullet weight with a knob at the end of it so you can put any skirt of your choice on it to match whatever your bait is. I'm trying it with a 1/16th oz bullet weight a beed in the middle with a black skirt then a 4/O hook and a berkly bait. It looks tantalizing but the… Continue

Went out today, on Lake Champlain, (east creek,Buoy 39 Marina.) Did OK for 43 deg water and stained. 2 3lb+ large mouth 1, 2+ small mouth, no Pike if the water would warm up a little that would help.

A Story As Cold as Dick Cheney's Black Heart
It was May in the year of our lord nineteen hundred and eighty eight and I was in the last frontier, the land of the midnight sun. Alaska.
I found myself with some time off from my duties defending the northwest from those Commie Russian savages across the bearing straits. Along with a few friends I decided to take a little fishing trip on the Chena River. The Chena runs near Fairbanks, Alaska and, like all rivers in the area,… Continue

When was the last time you took your family fishing? We went last weekend and caught 8 Bass over 1.5 pounds each. The kids had a blast and we were only out for about 3 hours. The key to having a great experience with the family while fishing is to make it a short outing so the young children do not get bored. Bring things for them to do if the fish are not biting such as a game to play like checkers ( watch the wind though). Bring water and a snack to satisfy their needs and you will have a fun… Continue

At a Senior Citizen's luncheon, an elderly
gentleman and an elderly lady
struck up a conversation and discovered that
they both loved to fish.
Since both of them were widowed,
they decided to go fishing together the next day.
The gentleman picked the lady up, and they
headed to the river to his fishing boat and
started out on their adventure.
They were riding down the river when there was a
fork in the river, and the gentleman… Continue

With sadness I report today the passing of Frank (Len) Rich, one of Canada’s most active outdoor enthusiasts and conservationist. Unfortunately, I was not able to get to know Len all that well before he passed away. Just before I joined the Outdoor Writers of Canada (OWC) we exchanged a few emails and a couple of phone calls and it had been his enthusiasm about everything to do with fishing, the outdoors and writing, plus his tireless commitment to recruiting new outdoor writers that made me… Continue

So here in WNY I am awaiting the arrival of the smally run. I babysit the creeks all day long and cant wait to get a fist jump on them. I prefer fishing them out of 18 mile creek, and also he buffalo river. I have been cating Lrge moth bass already for about a month now. I recently went to the Dunkirk boat harbor, which was beautiful but no luck for me there. I have also been catching some suckers and fishing the carp to stay activly fishing... Even with the heavy snowfall in the past few days, the ice conditions are extremely poor and unsafe. Mother Nature decided to dump one last snowstorm (hopefully) on us and we received about 12-16 inches of heavy mushy snow. Luckily for us, this is pretty much the norm around here and we just keep looking forward to May 15 and the spring Walleye Opener. And Saturday, May 16, 2009 starts the annual Lake Gogebic Spring Walleye Tournament sponsored by the area Chamber of Commerce. The entry fee for… Continue

After a cold spring the bass are finally spawning at one of my favorite lakes. I found some nice bass guarding nests a few were really nice. The water is so clear that it made it hard not to spook the fish. I caught a few off the beds, but they weren't all that big. I was fishing a zoom lizard on a shakey head jig. This is a great presentation for bed fishing. I just fan casted the spawning coves hoping to hit a bed. It worked very well. I caught a 4 and a 5 pounder today which made it worth… Continue

My buddy and I fished a tournament at Bull Shoals in southern MO this weekend 4/18. Never seen the water before, never fished in a tournament, the GPS went out during prefishing so we lost all of our spots and on the way back nearly ran out of gas. The odds were stacked against us and I was not in the greatest frame of mind. The locals in the tourney were catching 4 and 5 lb fish 3 to 4 days before and we had only boated a total of 6 keepers on thurs and fri. We were trying to manage those… Continue
