The Golden Girls Fishing Trip - The Big One That Couldn't Get Away

By Norma

The weather was beautiful in Michigan, late June 2009.

My cousin, Sandy, and my friend, Beverly were on a road trip heading to Hess Lake, in Newaygo Michigan, to enjoy four days of fishing. Beverly was a "greenhorn" when it came to fishing and she had shyly purchased her first adult fishing pole. I had given her one of my Dad's old tackle boxes and filled it full of basic necessary items for fishing. My… Continue

There's no doubt that Americans love their pets. A new survey by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) shows that more than 57 percent of U.S. households own one or more animals. But can having pets actually provide health benefits? Yes, say experts, as long as you're not allergic to animals or terrified of them. "Pet ownership is good for your health both physically and psychologically,"… Continue

Custom embroidered fishing hats

Custom Embroidery

Mike's Sporting Goods, a fishing and hunting store in Hainesport, NJ, is more than a fishing and hunting store. A few years ago, Mike's added custom embroidery services. Some of our customers ask "how in the world did Mike Sporting Goods get into custom embroidery work"? The answer is simple. Our local customers were members of fishing clubs or hunting clubs and they wanted custom t shirts, hats, and sweatshirts at affordable prices. Most of them had screen print or… Continue

Fly Fishing Basics - Finger Guards

By Sherri Russell

Yesterday when I went fly fishing on the Manistee River in Michigan, I was taught a different method of fly fishing called Chuck and Duck. Chuck and Duck fly fishing is the most effective type of fly fishing to land fish in the Manistee River. While fishing this method, my fingers were getting burned from the line while stripping it in. My guide told me that I could use tape or stripping guards on my fingers to protect them and be able to pull the line in much… Continue

So, you're thinking about taking a fly fishing vacation. But with today’s economy, you’re trying to make your dollar go as far as possible and have a great experience at the same time.

Friendships between Men and Women - Why can they be challenging?

I have had many friends come and go throughout my lifetime at the young age of forty four.

I have often wondered why men and women share the same views on some topics and vary so drastically on others. It has always seemed to me, with past experiences, that women are better at multiple friendships than men.

Women will often venture outside the rubber band and have multiple friends, both men and women, and all for different reasons. They can have friends for shopping,… Continue

Angler's on Foot & Fishing Reports from Alabama to Florida ---- Tight Lines

I enjoy fishing the flats all over Florida often stalking Reds , Snook and Trout using artificial baits only !! I've recently had the opportunity to fish the Pensacola and Gulf Breeze region and the bite was wild . I started the morning off around 6:30 am with Top Water Baits , then entered mid morning tossing suspending baits where my luck continued to carry over from the morning bite. I called it a day around 11:30 am . The morning bite brought in 2 reds 1 @ 13" and 1 @ 19" . Trout on the… Continue

Can A Fish See Color?

Fishing lures often boast great "attractive powers." Some lures rattle, some click, some fly. On balance, these "lures" are designed and built to hook fishermen, not fish. Why should fly fishers care about lures? The more I see fly tiers adding gimmicks to flies, the more their flies resemble lures. The more I see flies resembling lures, the more I realize their greatest value lies in fly-fisher "entertainment." Understanding how a fish sees will help you create flies designed, not to… Continue

Why Do People Kiss Fish Before Putting Them Back In The Water After Catching Them?

It is an old tradition to do with luck. It symbolizes a 'kiss goodbye' as well as offering a mark of respect to the fish and a thank you for the sport. As fish do not understand speech fisherman believe they communicate in kisses. However, not all fishermen kiss their fish, some believe it is unhygienic to do so. There are many old superstitions and wives tales surrounding fishermen and life at sea so kissing fish is really not very unusual. Other fishermen put maggots on their tongue to warm… Continue

Michigan Fly Fishing Techniques - Indicator Technique

Even among the fly fishing community, the technique is defined variously. Some anglers choose to fish nothing but dry flies, others refuse to fish a sinking line, and still others fish weighted flies but turn their noses up at split shot on a leader. What I have recognized is that these definitions carve up the sport along arbitrary lines, and that one angler's vision of fly fishing is not morally superior to another.

As a young girl, I only had the opportunity to fish with… Continue
